Jitendra Ahwad elected as NCP (SP)'s Legislature party leader; Rohit Patil named chief whip

Mumbai: The Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) on Sunday nominated first-time MLA Rohit Patil - the youngest legislator in the 15th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly - as the Chief Whip of the party.

Rohit (25) is son of former state Home Minister and ex-Deputy Chief Minister late R R Patil. 

Meanwhile, veteran leader Dr Jitendra Awhad, a four-time MLA from Mumbra-Kalwa in Thane district, has been elected as the Group Leader of NCP (SP) in the Legislative Assembly. 

Uttam Jankar, who is an MLA from Malshiras has been elected Whip. 

The appointments were announced by state NCP (SP) President Jayant Patil. 

From Tasgaon-Kavathe Mahankal in Sangli district, Rohit has defeated his late father’s arch rival Sanjaykaka Patil, who has switched to Ajit Pawar-led NCP from the BJP.

From Tasgaon-Kavathe Mahankal, the late RR Patil was elected six times and his mother Suman Patil twice. 

Raosaheb Ramrao Patil, better known as R R Patil, who was lovingly called RR or Aaba, passed on 16 February 2015 after battling cancer. As Home Minister, he ensured the dance bar ban in Mumbai and elsewhere in the state.
