<p>Mumbai: Eminent lawyer Ujjwal Nikam - who led the prosecution in several terrorism cases including the 12 March 1993 Mumbai serial blasts and the 26-28 November 2008 fidayeen attacks in Mumbai - is set to start a new innings as a lawmaker. </p><p>“This is a huge responsibility for me…I will live up to the expectations of people,” Nikam said as soon as the order of his nomination to the Rajya Sabha came.</p><p>Nikam thanked President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President J P Nadda and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. </p><p>During the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP fielded him from Mumbai North Central, however, he lost the polls. </p><p>Nikam is an experienced prosecutor – and has been the Special Public Prosecutor in several cases like the March 12, 1993 serial blasts case, Khairlanji massacare, twin blasts of August 2003 at Gateway of India and Zaveri Bazaar, the Kopardi rape-murder of a minor girl. </p>.Shringla, Nikam among 4 nominated to Rajya Sabha by President Murmu.<p>He has secured death penalties for more than 30 persons.</p><p>The two of them whose death penalties were confirmed by Supreme Court and hanged to death are Yakub Memon, the prime accused in the 12 March, 1993 serial blasts case in Mumbai and Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, the Pakistani fidayeen, who was part of the 10-member group that carried out the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai. He also examined Pakistani-American David Coleman Headley via video-conferencing. </p><p>Nikam was also the Special Public Prosecutor into the Pramod Mahajan murder case, Gulshan Kumar murder case, 2005 Marine Drive rape case, Mumbai Shakti Mill gangrape case of 2013, murder of Pallavi Purkayastha, the lawyer daughter of a bureaucrat-couple. </p><p>Nikam hails from Jalgaon.</p><p>His father, Deoraoji Nikam, was a judge and his mother Vimaladevi Nikam was a freedom fighter. After receiving his B. Sc degree, he earned a law degree from the K.C.E. Society’s SS Maniyar Law College in Jalgaon.</p><p>In 1991, he played a major role in convicting Ravinder Singh for the Kalyan bomb blast. His career took a major turn in 1993 when he became the public prosecutor for the Mumbai serial blasts case. </p><p>In 2010, he represented India at a global convention on terrorism held at the United Nations in New York.</p><p>In 2016, he was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award.</p>
