Suspected Maoists on Wednesday shot dead another CPM local committee member in the violence-hit West Midnapore district, taking the total number of the Marxist activists killed to 15, since the launch of the operation to flush out the leftwing militants in Lalgarh and its neighbourhood on June 18 last.

The extremists, police said, first called Sankar Das Adhikari out of his home at Chilgara village on Wednesday morning and sprayed bullets on him. He collapsed on the spot.

Then they warned the villagers against supporting or getting involved with the CPM, else they would suffer the same fate.

In another incident, a local leader of Jharkhand Party (Naren), Gunadhar Sing, was shot dead on Tuesday night by the rebels at Majheria village, police said. Before fleeing, the Maoists left some handbills which warned villagers against any sort of anti-Maoist activity.
