'Middle class is suffering': Surgeon flags struggles of common man as Saif Ali Khan reportedly claims around Rs 36 lakh insurance for treatment

Saif Ali Khan, who fell victim to a brutal knife attack in his home is still in the hospital recovering, while an accused in the case has been remanded in judicial custody till January 24.

With several details of the attack getting revealed over the time, it has come to the fore that the actor reportedly claimed medical insurance worth Rs 35.95 lakh.

Sharing a post on X about Saif Ali Khan's health insurance claim, Dr Prashant Mishra, a cardiac surgeon took to social media to highlight the struggles of the middle class as he wrote that the health insurer Niva Bhupa would never approve such a big amount for a common man.

“For small hospitals and common man, Niva Bupa will not sanction more than Rs 5 lakh for such treatment. All 5-star hospitals are charging exorbitant fees and medi claim companies are paying also. result – premiums are rising and the middle class is suffering," he wrote.

As per the document on X, Rs 25 lakh got sanctioned out of the Rs 35.95 lakh that the Bollywood actor claimed for his treatment.

DH was unable to verify the authenticity of the medical insurance claim.

Meanwhile, a news18 report quoted Niva Bupa Health Insurance company as saying: “A cashless pre-authorisation request was sent to us upon his hospitalisation and we have given approval of an initial amount to start the treatment."

This comes as the police identified the alleged attacker as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national who had illegally entered India and changed his name to Bijoy Das. He was held from adjoining Thane city. As per preliminary probe, he had entered the Bollywood star's home, in Satguru Sharan building in Bandra, in the early hours of January 16 with the intention of theft, police had said. Khan (54) was stabbed multiple times in the attack, after which he underwent a five-hour surgery in nearby Lilavati Hospital.
