A sub-committee of the International Coordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions has made the recommendation for retaining the 'A' grade (participant status) for NHRC, according to the rights panel.

The meeting of the sub-committee on accreditation was held in Geneva from May 23 to 27 in which re-accreditation of NHRIs of a number of countries, including India, was reviewed.

A group of NGOs under the banner of All India Network of NGOs and Individuals (AiNNI) had asked the international committee of NHRIs to downgrade NHRC, claiming it was beset with "corruption".

"The sub-committee has set aside the plea of the civil society groups," an NHRC official said today.
