Panel for 7-yr jail for terror funding

Last Updated 28 March 2012, 20:07 IST

A parliamentary standing committee has recommended that the minimum punishment for collecting or providing fund for terrorist activities should be increased to seven years of imprisonment from five years proposed in Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Bill.

The panel, which tabled its report on the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Bill, 2011, in Lok Sabha on Wednesday, also recommended that the quantum of fine to be imposed on the convicts of such offences should also be defined.

The bill seeks to amend Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, to make the law more effective in preventing terrorist activities and combat terror funding.

However, the bill left it on the court to decide the quantum of fine to be imposed on convicts for committing such offence.
