The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to entertain a PIL seeking direction to the Centre to ban WhatsApp and other such mobile messenger services for introducing encryption code, that poses a serious threat to the country’s security.

A bench of Chief Justice T S Thakur and Justice A M Khanwilkar suggested Gurugram-based RTI activist Sudhir Yadav to approach the government or the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) with his plea.

Arguing for himself, Yadav claimed that in response to his RTI application with Department of Telecommunication, the government said it possessed no information in this regard.

He contended the end-to-end 256-bit encryption introduced by WhatsApp in April made it impossible to decrypt messages, chat, call, video, images and documents.
