Sonia's Punjab rallies cancelled

Last Updated 19 January 2012, 09:56 IST

Inclement weather has forced cancellation of Congress President Sonia Gandhi's scheduled rallies at Moga and Kapurthala today in the run up to the elections to the 117-member state Assembly on January 30.

Sonia was to kick-start her party's election campaign from the Moga rally today.
"Both the rallies - Moga followed by Kapurthala - stand cancelled due to bad weather," a Congress spokesman told PTI.

Top Punjab Congress leaders, including state party chief Amarinder Singh and party's political affairs in-charge Gulchain Singh Charak, were among others who were expected to attend the rally.

It was to be the first big political rally in the state.

On a whirlwind tour, Sonia was to address two rallies one each at Malwa and other at Kapurthala in Doaba region of the state.

Dense fog, which had been blinding the state for the past few days, played a spoilsport for the Congressmen in the state.

The spokesman said that Sonia's new programme will be announced shortly.
