<p>The Samajwadi Party (SP) government, it appears, is on a ‘name changing spree’ whether it is the flagship schemes of the previous Mayawati regime or the newly-created districts named after Dalit icons.<br /><br /></p>.<p>After changing the name of the ‘Ambedkar Village Development Scheme’ and re-christening it as ‘Lohia Gram Yojna’ (after the socialist ideologue Ram Manohar Lohia), the new dispensation is now reportedly contemplating to change the names of the newly created districts in the state.<br /><br />Mayawati had created some new districts in the state and had named them after dalit icons. Some old names were also changed by Mayawati. The districts, which had been re-named were Panchsheel Nagar, Prabuddh Nagar, Bheem Nagar, Jyotiba Phule Nagar, Mahamaya Nagar, Chatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Nagar and Ramabai Nagar.<br /><br />According to sources here, the government is considering to change the names and restore their old names. While Panchsheel Nagar would be Hapur, Prabuddh Nagar would be re-christened as Shamli. Bheem Nagar is likely to be Sambhal again. J P Nagar may be re-christened as Amroha, the old name. Mahamaya Nagar will be known as Hathras again. Ramabai Nagar will get back its old name-Kanpur Dehat. Chatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Nagar will be known as Amethi again, sources said.<br /><br />When Mayawati had assumed the charge of the state in 2007, she had promptly scrapped the ‘Lohia Gram Yojna’ (village development scheme) and instead focused on the development of ‘Ambedkar Villages’ (villages having a substantial population of dalits).<br /><br /> The SP regime changed the name of the Ambedkar Village Scheme and re-named it after Lohia. Under the Lohia Gram Yojna, the government would provide basic facilities in one thousand select villages.<br /><br />That Kanshiram was not a favorite with the new regime was clear when the state cabinet recently at its meeting decided to scrap an award instituted in the BSP founder’s name and re-christened it after the legendary Indian army jawan Abdul Hamid, who had laid down his life while fighting for the country against Pakistan. <br /><br />The SP leaders had also talked about setting up hospitals and colleges on the empty spaces in the memorials and parks constructed by Mayawati, the latter had warned the state government against ‘tampering’ with the statues of the dalit ideologues as it might create a law and order problem.<br /><br />Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has said that the statues and parks will not be demolished but the vacant spaces may be used for setting up hospitals.<br /></p>
