Supreme Court endorses party stance on 2G: Congress

The Congress Friday said with the apex court dismissing a petition to make Finance Minister P. Chidambaram a co-accused in the 2G case, the party's stand has been "endorsed".

Congress spokesman Manish Tewari said: "The apex court (decision) endorses and underscores the point we have been making since 2008 that there is no case made out against the finance minister."

He added that Chidambaram was not culpable "from a legal, criminal or even constitutional point".

Tewari was speaking after the Supreme Court dismissed Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy's petition seeking to make Chidambaram a co-accused in the 2G case.

"It is high time the BJP revisits its position in the JPC (Joint Parliamentary Committee studying the CAG report on the 2G scam)," he said.

He also termed the walkout from the JPC by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members demanding that the prime minister and finance minister be summoned an "unseemly sight" .

He said the opposition party should "introspect and seriously see" the consequences of holding up parliament repeatedly "because it serves their ulterior motives".

Parliament was adjourned for the fourth day Friday after the BJP created an uproar demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over a CAG report on coal block allocation.

Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said the apex court ruling had proved that Chidambaram was not involved.

"Our stand is vindicated. He (Swamy) will keep filing petitions. That is his business. If it is rejected, he will file another plea."

Swamy, a member of opposition National Democratic Alliance, moved the apex court challenging a Feb 4 order by a trial court rejecting his plea to make Chidambaram a co-accused along with former communications minister A. Raja and seeking a CBI probe against him.

Earlier, Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office V. Narayanasamy slammed Swamy, saying "everybody knows he has been filing petitions against everyone in the Congress".
Swamy has said he will file a review petition.
