It’s about quilling to perfection

Last Updated 02 September 2018, 16:21 IST

Apoorva Deshpande, an IT professional is an ardent follower of ‘A hobby a day keeps the doldrums away’. She takes time off her busy schedule and dedicates it to quilling.

The fact that a small strip of paper can create wonders was what inspired Apoorva to take up quilling. It was in 2015 that she completed over 20 artworks including 12 pairs of earrings.

“The first time I saw a quilling artwork was at a friend’s place and I was instantly motivated to try the same,” she says.

She says that quilling is the only way to de-stress herself. Cutting strips of paper and turning them into pieces of art is rejuvenating for Apoorva.

“My first attempt to quilling was for my parents’ 25th wedding anniversary. I made them a greeting card with quilling paper. Though the card wasn’t up to the mark, my parents appreciated me for my efforts,” she says.

Apoorva doesn’t intend to sell her artworks as it is purely a hobby for her. She customises greeting cards and gifts them to her friends and family.

“I like to make something special for my loved ones. So I prefer designing gifts rather than shopping for one at a gift shop,” she says.

She buys all her quilling material from Raja Market as she says that it is one place where she can find anything and everything.

Apoorva does not look for ideas online. “Being a self-taught artist, I use my creative flair,” she adds.

Quilling paper, quilling needles and glue are the three most important things for the hobby, says Apoorva.

“You can also use a comb to design your artworks,” she adds.

Being interested in arts and crafts since childhood, Apoorva is happy that she is able to continue her passion. Amidst her busy schedule, Apoorva makes sure that she makes at least three to four artworks per month. “Weekends are reserved for quilling,” says Apoorva.

“Having a hobby is the best way to get rid of the monotony of one’s everyday life. Develop a hobby and notice the winds of enthusiasm sweep through you,” she says.
