Beginning as a three- member group, ‘Clown With a Frown’ soon graduated to a five-piece band before incorporating a brass section in 2012. Today, the band has become a force to reckon with in the Indian music scene. Having won ‘Strawberry Fields, 2012’ which was held at Palace Grounds, after hav
ing competed with the likes of ‘Anthracite’, ‘The F16s’, ‘The News’ and ‘Orchid’, ‘Clown With a Frown’ has now become a regular name at Bangalore pubs and recently played at the Great Indian Octoberfest and The MAD festival.
Influenced by artistes from the ’70s such as ‘Earth’, ‘Wind and Fire’ and ‘Tower of Power’, this band wants to bring funk back into the scene through its music. Known for their energetic, crowd-pulling live performances, ‘Clown With a Frown’ has garnered a faithful fan following, especially through its Facebook page.
A prominent feature of these performances, apart from the widely talked about brass section, is front-woman Abby Attavar who defies all stereotypes about fronting a band and holds her own amidst the remaining
members.
Their song ‘Cupid Vodoo’, which featured in their setlist at ‘Strawberry Fields’, exemplifies the kind of music that the band stands for. While the individual members have varied influences, the amalgamation of their ideas revolves around a signature pop/funk rock sound that the band has found for itself.
With plans of releasing an album sometime next year, ‘Clown With a Frown’ is definitely at a very exciting time in their musical career and remains one of the bands to look out for in the coming years.
