A 17-year-old MBBS student committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her hostel room at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the early hours of Sunday, said the police.

The body of Khushboo Chaudhary, a resident of Bikaner in Rajasthan, was spotted by fellow hostellers around 2:50 am, added the police.

“The hostellers approached the security guards who called us. When we arrived at the hostel, we found the room locked from inside. We broke open the door and found the teenager hanging from the ceiling fan,” said a police officer. They added that the body was sent for post-mortem examination.

“We have taken possession of Khushboo’s cellphone to look at all possible angles. However, no suicide note was found in her room,” said an officer.

Khushboo had taken admission to MBBS first year in July.

Ragging not suspected

The AIIMS authorities conducted an internal probe to find what forced Khushboo to take the extreme action.

“The body of Khushboo Chaudhary, who had recently joined the first-year MBBS course, was found hanging in her room in the girls hostel on the campus. A preliminary inquiry conducted by AIIMS has ruled out ragging or any adjustment difficulty as a possible cause for her reported suicide as she had been a student at AIIMS for six weeks only,” said AIIMS spokesperson Dr Amit Gupta in a statement.
