Bengal, Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat to be under cyclone mitigation project

West Bengal, Kerala, Maharashtra and Gujarat will soon be covered under the National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project (NCRMP) to mitigate the impact of the natural disaster.

NCRMP has been developed with the support of World Bank and is presently under implementation in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha at a total cost of Rs 1,496.71 crore.

"In Phase-II of the project, four more states - West Bengal, Kerala, Maharashtra and Gujarat - are proposed to be covered at an outlay of Rs 1,755 crore," the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said in a release.

India is one of the most cyclone prone countries and many times it has been hit by severe and super cyclones. In order to mitigate the impact of cyclone, the NCRMP has been developed with the support of World Bank.

The major components of the project include early warning dissemination to coastal communities, construction of cyclone risk mitigation infrastructures and technical assistance for cyclone hazard risk mitigation capacity building and knowledge creation.

Meanwhile, the NDMA will observe its 8th formation day on September 28 and reaffirm its commitment to make India disaster resilient, the release said.

The Authority is mandated to take measures for prevention, preparedness, capacity development, mitigation, awareness generation, rehabilitation and recovery, response, and recommend provision of funds for the purpose of mitigation at national and state level for all kinds of natural and man-made disasters.
