A senior BJP legislator reportedly threatened and abused a senior woman officer in full public view leading the latter red faced.

Udaybhan Singh, an MLA from Fatehpur Sikri in Uttar Pradesh's Agra district, was caught on camera threatening sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Garima Singh in front of a large number of his supporters.

''Apko meri takat ka ehsaas nahin hain.... Main satta paksh ka vidhayak hoon... Aap mujhse hekdi se baat karengi?'' (You have no idea about my power.... I'm an MLA of the ruling party.... How dare you talk to me with so much authority?)," Singh was heard telling Garima.

The matter came to light after a video showing the MLA threatening the officer went viral.

Garima Singh later said that Singh's behaviour was ''unbecoming'' of a public representative.

According to sources, the MLA wanted the officer to ignore the reported wrongdoings of some village panchayat 'pradhans' (chiefs) but the latter refused to bow down to pressure.

''I can't go against the government rules,'' she told the MLA.

Singh later justified his remarks saying that the SDM was like his daughter and that he had ''every right'' to ''scold'' her.

Earlier too, BJP legislators, leaders and even ministers have embarrassed the party and the government by their deeds.

Barely a few days ago, a woman BJP legislator threatened to beat a senior policeman with shoes after he refused to do her bidding in state's Lakhimpur Kheri district, about 150 kilometre from Lucknow.

The policeman, who took umbrage at the MLA's outbursts, was heard saying in an audio clip, which went viral, that he would prefer a transfer rather than be abused by the legislator.
