BJP takes a dig at AAP over ban on diesel cabs

Last Updated 01 May 2016, 20:51 IST

The BJP on Sunday said the ban on diesel vehicles will increase problems of commuters travelling between Delhi and other NCR towns.

The statement comes on a day when diesel commercial vehicle owners held a protest at Jantar Mantar. BJP’s Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta said that due to impervious and indifferent attitude, the Delhi government has jeopardised livelihood of 4 lakh people in the capital.

The traffic police also penalised about 4 dozen diesel cabs running on national permit – circumventing the Supreme Court ban on use of diesel cabs in Delhi.

The Supreme Court ruled a ban on private taxis fitted with petrol and diesel engines. “It will increase the difficulty for people who are commuting between Noida, Faridabad, Bahadurgarh, Ghaziabad, Sonipat and their workplaces. The Delhi government is responsible and accountable for risking the livelihood and employment of lakhs of people in the capital. “The apex court extended the deadline for converting taxis into less-polluting CNG mode to April 30, 2016. Now the ban is imposed and petrol and diesel taxis cannot ply in Delhi (NCR) anymore,” said Gupta.

Gupta said it clearly demonstrates the “indifferent approach” of the AAP government towards the welfare of the people as they did not take adequate steps to fix alternatives in public transportation system of Delhi.

The SC hinted about this decision 2 months ago and extended the deadline twice, he added.
