Boy killed in pitched battle over cricket

Akash was beaten to death by some miscreants because he had refused to vacate the pitch on which he and his friends were playing.

The incident took place on the grounds of BN College in Patna on Sunday evening. However, the police on Monday arrested the main accused Faizal, who had mercilessly beaten Akash with a bat and wickets.

Akash was a student of Class VI in Vivekanand School, and as usual had gone to play cricket on the BN College campus in the evening.
“A group of youths arrived there and asked Akash to vacate the pitch as they played cricket everyday on the same pitch. The assailants also snatched the ball from Akash’s hand,” said a police officer.

“When Akash demanded his ball, the miscreants attacked him with wickets and bat. They also assaulted his brother Avinash when he tried to protect Akash,” said the police officer, adding, that though Avinash sustained minor injuries, Akash was bleeding profusely.

He was rushed to the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), where he succumbed to his injuries.

The incident sparked off tension in the area, which is dominated by the minority community. A large number of locals assembled on the street, shouting slogans demanding the arrest of the main culprit Faizal. As the police failed to trace the accused on Sunday, the angry mob indulged in arson and stone-pelting.
“The main accused Faizal has been arrested this morning and will be produced in the court,” DSP Sheela Irani said on Monday.
