Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Sunday expressed confidence that his party would return to power in Karnataka but remained open to the alliance in case of a hung Assembly as predicted by the exit polls.

Speaking to reporters here, Tharoor heaped praise on Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and said that the latter had run a great campaign in the southern state in the Assembly polls.

‘’Siddaramaiah has actually conducted a sterling campaign,’’ he said. The Congress leader, however, did not rule out the possibility of a dent into the party’s electoral prospects in the state by the JD(S).

“We know that some seats will be taken, particularly in the southern parts of Karnataka, by the JD(S)...... that is why we are open to every possibility,’’ Tharoor said. Tharoor said in reply to a question that a joint opposition could prevent the BJP from returning to power in 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

He also attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not acting tough on Pakistan even after the admission by former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharief that the Mumbai terror attack had been perpetrated by terrorists from his country.
