Govt to challenge HC order cancelling 36,000 primary teachers’ jobs, says Mamata

Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on Monday, said that the Calcutta High Court order concerning cancellation of 36,000 jobs of primary school teachers will be challenged in the Court, with the state moving to the division bench.

Banerjee said that the exclusion hits around two lakh people, and among the affected people many are facing depression. She said that as the matter is sub-judice, she will not talk about the court matter, but the division bench will be moved.

Talking of her ‘pro-people’ government, Banerjee said that the legal fight will be taken forward, and held a section of the state government employees – who have been agitating, and demanding an enhanced DA from the state – responsible for the teachers’ loss.

The Court last week, in an order had cancelled the appointment of 36,000 primary school teachers in state schools. The Court, however, allowed the disqualified teachers to continue working for four months with payment at par with that of para-teachers. Teachers, who had their jobs cancelled, are permitted to appear in the fresh recruitment process.

On Monday, the Court permitted the state’s primary education board to appeal against the earlier order on cancellation of the appointments.
