The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday took over the case related to the recent arrest of a member of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in Tripura.

Tripura police had registered a case following the arrest of Nazir Sheikh, a suspected JMB member on March 6. A case was registered under Sections of IPC and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

A statement issued by NIA said Sheikh alias Patla Anans, a resident of Dighir Pahar village in Murshidabad district in West Bengal was part of a conspiracy to carry out terror act in India.

Sources said the case was re-registered after MHA decided to hand over it to NIA and investigation had already started about activities of the Bangladesh-based terror group.

Pursuant to the criminal conspiracy, Moirangthem Rana Meitei alias Paikhomba extorted money from local people, departments, schools, institutions for raising funds for KCP (PWG), said the NIA statement.

Moirengthem was arrested in September last year in New Delhi.
