The Supreme Court has asked the AIIMS to set up a board to examine the health condition of tainted godman Asaram Bapu before taking up his bail plea.

Rejecting his interim bail plea on health grounds, a bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and R K Agrawal directed the three-member panel of doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences to assess Asaram’s health condition and submit its report in 10 days.

"We are not inclined to grant relief to the petitioner. We direct the director of AIIMS to constitute a panel of three doctors to examine the health condition of the petitioner (Asaram) and submit its report in 10 days," the bench said.

Asaram (75) was arrested by Jodhpur Police on August 31, 2013, and has been in jail since then.

Appearing for the godman, senior advocate Raju Ramachandran said the medical board constituted on the high court’s direction said Asaram’s health condition is deteriorating and he therefore needs interim bail for one or two months.
