Kerala girl Hadiya alias Akhila, whose conversion to Islam and marriage came under judicial review last year, has now become a doctor.

Her husband Shafin Jahan made a post on his social media account expressing his happiness over his wife completing her Homoeo degree course at a college at Salem in Tamilnadu. “Overcoming religion, love and patience, Hadiya is hereafter Dr Hadiya Ashokan,” read Shafin’s post.

Hadiya’s father K M Ashokan hailing from Vaikom in Kottayam district in Kerala had approached the Kerala High court in 2017 alleging that his daughter was forcibly converted to Islam and her marriage with Shefin was illegal. Though the HC annulled the marriage, the Supreme Court later set aside the HC order and allowed Hadiya to live with Shafin.

The legal fight of Ashokan gained national attention as he alleged extremist links to Shafin, who hailed from Malappuram. He even expressed fears that his daughter might be taken to Syria to join extremist outfits. Her name was initially Akhila, bt was later changed to Hadiya after she converted to Islam.

Hadiya had expressed her wish to complete her studies even at the court. While the case was progressing, Hadiya was allowed to continue her study at a college in Salem. And tight police cover was given to her.

Shafin allowed her to continue with her studies even after the SC case was over.
