Heavy rainfall in Maharashtra leaves 7 dead

At least seven people were killed in various rain-related incidents as heavy rain lashed Maharashtra on Tuesday.

The Vidarbha and Marathwada regions received heavy downpour which resulted in many places being inundated.

The suburban areas of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region too received good downpour resulting in a road traffic mess, however, there was no impact on trains plying on the Central, Western, Harbour and Trans-Harbour lines of Mumbai's suburban railway network.

The flight movement at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport was running as per schedule.

According to reports reaching the state capital, Nagpur and Pune also received heavy rainfall.

In Bhandara district, three persons died when a house caved in.

In Nanded district, three of a family died when the SUV in which they were travelling was swept away in flood and another person in the district was drowned to death.

The twin districts of Chandrapur and Gadchiroli in Vidarbha region received over 100 mm rainfall in the last 36 hours.

More than 150 villages in Aheri and Bhamragad tehsils were virtually disconnected from district headquarters and main towns as small bridges and culverts were inundated.

The Buldhana and Amravati districts too received a heavy downpour and the districts saw waterlogging in some places.

Traffic between Mumbai and Ahmednagar districts was badly affected because of a landslide at the Malshej Ghats.

The landslide occurred in the wee hours and the debris came crashing down over a tempo injuring its driver.

The Malshej Ghats leads Mumbai to Ahmednagar and Pune via Thane district and is one of the most important roads.

It would take a day's time to clear up the debris.

The Mumbai-based Regional Meteorological Centre of the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in Konkan-Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada on Wednesday.

Weathermen have advised fishermen of the coastal Konkan coast not to venture out into the Arabian Sea.
