On I-Day, J&K governor hopes for better ties with Pak

Asserting that only dialogue can solve problems faced by people, Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra on Wednesday hoped that Pakistan's new government led by Imran Khan will recognise the“futility of continuing with its terrorist agenda” in the state.

“I very much hope that the new leadership in Islamabad will recognise the futility of continuing with its terrorist agenda in Jammu and Kashmir and accept that peace between our two countries will contribute towards the establishment of fruitful relations, growing trade, prosperity and all-round mutual benefits,” he said while delivering his Independence Day address at the Sher-e-Kashmir cricket stadium in Srinagar.

Pakistan's new government with Imran Khan as its prime minister is expected to be sworn-in on August 18.

“Pakistan has tried to send an unusually large number of trained terrorists into India during the past year. Our Army and police carried out effective operations and neutralised, perhaps, the largest ever number of terrorists in the past many years,” Vohra , who took over as the governor of Jammu and Kashmir in 2008, said.

The Governor said divisive and confrontational approaches can never lead to the resolution of any of the problems.

“As we have seen for ourselves, such approaches have only generated vested interests which have fractured our society and severely damaged our centuries-old values and traditions,” he said.

Vohra also announced that the much awaited Panchayat and urban local bodies elections will be held between September and December.

“The prolonged delay in establishing democratically-elected self-governing bodies at the grassroots level in urban and rural areas has resulted in the loss of considerable funds which would have been available if elections had been held," he said.

The governor, who took over the reins of Jammu and Kashmir following the fall of the PDP-BJP government on June 19, said it had been his unflinching endeavour to see that the entire administrative apparatus, from the village level up to the state secretariat, functioned with promptitude, efficiency and complete accountability.

He said the administration was working assiduously to ensure that the resources available under the Prime Minister's Development Package of Rs. 80,000 crore for the state and under the various pan-India flagship schemes were efficiently utilised.
