Rakesh Kumar Thakur, who hailed from Bihar's Darbhanga district, died this morning at a private clinic in the city where he was admitted four days ago, IIT Kanpur Director Sanjay Govind Dhande said. Thakur, who was an M. Tech student of mechanical engineering, had been undergoing treatment for some mental problem for past some time, he said, adding he took admission in the institute in 2009 and was staying in hostel.

His condition started to deteriorate four days back following which he was admitted in the clinic. His parents were also sent for. IIT Registrar Sanjeev Kashalkar said his parents were present at the time of his demise. They later left with the body for Darbhanga. To a query, he ruled out the suicide angle.

Meanwhile, some students of the institutes have suspected foul play in the matter. "The institute did not disclose to anyone about Thakur's illness. They admitted him in the hospital in a secret manner and when he died his body was secretly sent home early morning," a student said.
