JMM, BJP in coalition talks

Last Updated 25 December 2009, 19:30 IST

Hours after Soren’s election, JMM national vice-president and Barhet MLA Hemlal Murmu said: “The JMM, BJP and the All Jharkhand Students’ Union (AJSU) will form the next government in the state.”

However, emerging from a party legislators’ meeting late in the evening, Shibu Soren chose to be tight-lipped.

“We are in touch with some political parties for government formation. Things will be clear by tomorrow (Saturday), including the issue of chief minister,”he said.

The developments came a day after both Soren and Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (P) president Babulal Marandi claimed to form government in the state.

The AJSU’s five MLAs, JMM’s 18 and 18 legislators of the BJP take the combine to the majority mark of 41.

However, the BJP and AJSU leaders avoided a direct answer on supporting the JMM. Keeping his party’s cards close to his chest, AJSU leader Sudesh Mahto said the party was exploring the possibility of forming the best possible government. “We are neither part of the BJP nor the JMM or even the Congress at this hour. A final decision on lending support to a group will be taken in a day or two, and it will be in the larger interests of the state,” said Mahto.
