Last Updated 20 February 2013, 12:01 IST

To discourage alcohol consumption among teenagers, the UDF government today decided to raise the age limit for buying liquor to 21 from 18 now in Kerala.

A meeting of the state cabinet approved the proposal to bring in an ordinance in this regard by amending the Kerala Abkari (Excise) Act, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told reporters.

The law would also have a clause to make it mandatory for films to display the warning 'drinking is injurious to health' while showing scenes of boozing.

The ordinance would be recommended to the Governor for its promulgation with immediate effect.
