"The matter is being taken seriously and security has been stepped up after receipt of the letter threatening to blow up railway stations in Ghaziabad, Moradabad, Muzaffarnagar and Saharanpur, besides Haridwar in Uttarakhand," Superintendent Ghaziabad railway station Kuber Preshad said.

The letter, purportedly given by a 'commander' of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and received by Preshad two days back, claimed that the purpose was to take revenge for the killing of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

The official, however, said this was not the first time that authorities had received such a letter, but they were not taking any chances.

Security has been tightened at all public places and searches are being carried out in malls, railway stations of the city, Ghaziabad SP (City), G K Shahi said.
"We are alert to face any situation that arises," Shahi said.
