Moon, Lee travel in Delhi Metro

Last Updated 13 October 2018, 11:30 IST

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Monday jointly inaugurated a large mobile manufacturing facility of Samsung Electronics at Noida in Uttar Pradesh.

Modi and Moon travelled by Delhi Metro to reach the new manufacturing facility, which Samsung Electronics built with an investment of about Rs 5,000 crore. “This investment would not only strengthen Samsung’s business links with India, but is also significant in the context of the relationship between India and (South) Korea,” said Modi.

Prime Minister and South Korean President were received by vice-chairman and de facto chief of Samsung Electronics, Lee Jae-yong, as they reached the new manufacturing facility. The inaugural ceremony was the first opportunity for Moon to meet Lee after he took over as President of South Korea in May 2017. Lee was arrested in February 2017 and was imprisoned after being convicted of bribery in a corruption scandal, which also sent to jail Moon's predecessor and former South Korean President Park Geun-hye.

The heir apparent of South Korea's largest business conglomerate was released from jail on February 5 this year, but he could meet the new president of his country only on Monday – at Noida in India.
