Congress welcomes SC directives on electoral bonds

Congress on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court directives on electoral bonds, saying the move would expose the nexus between the BJP and its “suited, booted” friends.

The Congress remarks came after the Supreme Court directed all the political parties to disclose details of the donations received by them through electoral bonds to the Election Commission.

“We welcome the Supreme Court judgement. Transparency in political funding is an absolute must,” Priyanka Chaturvedi, convenor of the AICC Communication Department, told reporters here.

She said the nexus between the BJP and its “suited, booted friends” would be exposed because of this judgement.

Congress has been opposed to the electoral bonds scheme introduced by the government through the Finance Bill last year.

“This is cheating, this is fraud, this is facilitating unilateral contributions without transparency,” Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi had said on Thursday after Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi had made certain observations on the electoral bonds scheme.

Gogoi had said if the identity of those buying the electoral funds meant for transparent political funding was not known, the government's efforts to check black money in polls would be futile.
