In a freak accident, a train passenger sitting on the window seat of Neelanchal Express train's general compartment, was killed after an iron rod crashed through the window of the coach and pierced his neck near Somna railway station on Delhi-Kanpur section of the Northern railway on Friday. The incident happened around nine in the morning.

"One person died in the general coach by an external object (iron rod) which damaged the window. The train was stopped at the Aligarh junction at 09:23 hrs," the railway spokesperson said.

The deceased was identified as Hrishekesh Dubey (34), a native of Sultanpur who was living in Delhi. He was sitting by the window when the iron rod pierced his neck.

"The incident occurred some 35 kilometers before Aligarh railway station. The railway staff stopped the train at Aligarh and took Hrishekesh Dubey to hospital where the doctors declared him dead," Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO) of North Central Railway (NCR) Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay said.

Shocking visuals which emerged on social media showed the youth, identified as Harikesh Dubey, a resident of UP's Sultanpur district, sitting still in a pool of blood with an iron rod across his neck. Dubey was on his way to Lucknow from Delhi.

According to the reports, the incident took place at the railway tracks that were undergoing construction.

Railway officials said that the body of the youth was handed over to the GRP at Aligarh railway station.

They said that it was being ascertained as to how the iron rod came through the window of the coach. ''The matter is being investigated,'' a railway official said in Aligarh. The officials, however, did not confirm if some construction was going on the tracks where the incident happened.

"The body has been sent for postmortem examination and a probe has been ordered in the matter," the CPRO added.

Meanwhile, a pall of gloom has shrouded the house of Dubey in Sultanpur.
