Over 2,000 Delhi children reported missing, says an RTI

2,161 children were reported missing since last five months with 600 still not rescued by the police, the Delhi Police said in a reply to an RTI query by Alliance for People's Rights.

The Right To Information filed in January to ascertain the number of children gone missing from the capital places Outer Delhi at the highest pedestral with an average of 2 children missing per day followed by Jangirpuri, Aman Vihar, Sultanpuri areas.

The NGOs also alleged of illegal rackets operating to propagate illegal activities like human trafficking to be the prime reason behind such staggering numbers.

"The rescued children from Delhi's various districts were found to have been exploited for illegal activities like human trafficking," said Banerjee. The NGO cited a Jahangirpuri labourer Kamlesh case whose search for her 10-year-old son missing since October has been endless or Sunita who have become hopeless to ever find her daughter missing since July.

Appealing to the Delhi police, the NGOs asked police to play an active role in rescuing missing children. "The basic law and order has to be in place for which a structural reform is needed," Reena Banerjee, an activist said.

As per the data, Jhangirpuri recorded the highest number of missing children with figures touching 217 and Aman Vihar stood at 99.
