The Press Council of India (PCI) has taken suo motu cognizance of the attacks on mediapersons on the premises of the Patiala House Court and asked the Delhi Police to submit a report.

Condemning the attack, a member of the PCI said a committee will soon be set up to conduct an enquiry into the incident of assault on mediapersons.

“Suo motu cognizance of the reported attack on media at Patiala House court have been taken. The Delhi Police has been asked to submit a report,” the council said in a statement on Wednesday.

Journalists were once again attacked on the premises of Patiala House court on Wednesday by group of people in lawyer’s dress when Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Union President Kanhaiya Kumar was brought in. Mediapersons were beaten up by a similar set of mob earlier on Monday.

“The council will not allow such attacks on mediapersons. While the council has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident and called for a report from Delhi Police, a committee will also be immediately set up to conduct a probe into the two incidents,”  PCI member Rajiv Ranjan Nag told Deccan Herald.

The council has also taken cognizance of a case of murder of a journalist in Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh, directing a local member of the PCI to conduct “discreet inquiry” into the case and submit his report.
