Punjab govt to put women in drivers' seats

Last Updated 27 November 2009, 17:25 IST

Officials in the state transport department said qualified women would be imparted holistic training in driving skills and knowledge of vehicle maintenance. The trained women drivers could then be absorbed into the state-run transport service which is already facing a shortfall of qualified drivers.

They said a four-acre piece of land had been earmarked for the driving institute to turn out  women drivers. The programme could result in smashing the stereotype of a turbaned Sardar saddled behind the steering wheel. Recently, qualified women took to driving auto rickshaws in Chandigarh when the radio auto service was launched. Establishment of the institute would be to provide an avenue for employment.
