The Punjab Police have booked a man in his early twenties for allegedly raping an 80-year old woman in the fields in a village near Amritsar.

The victim will undergo a medical examination at the civil hospital in Amritsar on Monday. The suspect, Som (24), is absconding.

The victim lives with her husband in a village, around 30 km from Amritsar. She has three sons and two daughters, and all are married and have children.

According to the victim, the suspect used to frequent their house in the village. The suspect told the 80-year old woman that he wanted her to avail a government scheme for building a toilet at home.

The suspect told her that she should accompany him to the venue in the local grain market where officials would be distributing money to the beneficiaries under the government scheme.

Som asked the woman to accompany him on his motorcycle, which she did.
However, the suspect topped his bike midway, dragged her into the fields and raped her.

The complaint stated that the victim called up one of his daughters from the mobile phone of a passerby. The daughter, in a state of panic, called up the police helpline for assistance.

The victim's husband said Som left his wife in the fields in physical and mental trauma after raping her.

According to sources, the suspect is a drug addict. The police have launched a manhunt to nab him.
