'Romeo' cop tries to bribe victim in Uttar Pradesh
A senior cop in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district, who had been suspended for harassing a girl, allegedly offered Rs 2,00,000 to her to 'withdraw' the case.

According to police, the victim, a resident of Bisauli area in the district, alleged in her complaint that the suspended inspector S P Upadhyaya had sent a man to her on Saturday with Rs 2,00,000  for withdrawing the complaint filed by the victim.
Taking a serious view of the matter, the authorities have transferred the investigation to a different district and said that a circle officer would now probe the complaint.
Police sources said that Upadhyaya, who had, after the registration of case of harassment, dubbed as 'Romeo' by the local media, also had been shunted to Pilibhit district so that he was not able to ''influence'' the probe.
The inspector, who was earlier in-charge of Bisauli police station in the district, had sent several ''obscene'' messages to the girl on Whatsapp after managing to procure her number.

The cop got the girl's father arrested on trumped up charges after she lodged a complaint with senior police official in this regard.
The father was released and the cop was placed under suspension after a preliminary probe into the complaint. Police said that the girl and her family would also be provided with security.
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath had, soon after assuming charge of the state, ordered setting up of 'anti -romeo squads' at every police station to crack down on the eve teasers and ensure safety of the women. The squads, though praised by some, have also come under sharp attack from various quarters.
