Teenage girl commits suicide after failing to qualify NEET

Last Updated 05 June 2018, 14:52 IST

Upset over her failure to qualify in NEET (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test), a 17-year-old girl committed suicide by jumping off a high rise building in Hyderabad on Tuesday, even as onlookers pleaded with her to not take such an extreme step.

The results of the exam were declared on Monday. According to eyewitnesses and the CCTV footage available with the police, a girl, later identified as Jasleen Kaur Saluja of Kacheduda area, reached Mayuri Kushal Towers in the busy Abids centre around 10 am and parked her scooter at the ground floor. She then took the staircase to reach the top floor of the nine-storey building.

Some people recorded the fatal fall on their phones while shouting at her to stop.

Her father Ranveer Singh, a businessman in the city, said she was upset ever since the results were out.

She did not talk to anybody even on Tuesday morning.

Abids Sub Inspector K Lakshmaiah, who is investigating the case, told reporters that the CCTV footage shows the girl going up by staircase at 10.02 am. “The parents told us that she was depressed over not qualifying for the NEET exam,” Lakshmaiah said.

The police officer said she left home saying she would be going to meet a friend. It took nearly two hours for the police to establish the identity of Jasleen as she did not carry any ID proof with her.

They ascertained her identity using the key to her moped.
