Trouble for govt if Lokpal Bill draft is bogus: CPI

Last Updated 30 June 2011, 14:00 IST

The remarks came after a team of civil society activists led by Anna Hazare met leaders of the Communist Party of India (CPI) to put their points across on the issue of the Lokpal and seek support for their version of the bill.

CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan said after the meeting that his party wants an "effective law which has teeth to fight corruption" and that the Left parties and others supporting it will discuss the issue.

He said when Parliament convenes, the CPI expects the government to introduce the bill "but we can't predict what will be in it".

"Which draft will be introduced (in Parliament), we don't know. If the government comes up with a bogus draft, then there will be trouble," he told reporters.

He, however, said good discussions are expected in Parliament on the issue.

Hazare, accompanied by Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal, met Bardhan, CPI National Secretary D Raja and party leader Atul Kumar Anjan here.

Following the meeting, the anti-corruption activist said his team was meeting party leaders to inform them about the two different drafts that have been brought out.

"We respect democracy. Before the Lokpal Bill is introduced in Parliament, we are trying to talk to all parties, informing them about the provisions in the government draft and Jan Lokpal Bill," Hazare said.
