After nearly 40 days of interrogation, a special NIA court in Mumbai on Friday sent suspended assistant police inspector Sachin Vaze to judicial custody till April 23.

The NIA had arrested Vaze on March 13, in connection with the planting of Scorpio laden with gelatin sticks and a threatening letter near Antilia, the residence of Reliance Industries Ltd chairman Mukesh Ambani.

On March 24, a special court in Thane ordered the state Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) to hand over the case of the murder of SUV owner Mansukh Hiren to the NIA – as the Ministry of Home Affairs asked the federal agency to take over the case.

During the hearing, special NIA judge PR Sitre sent Vaze to judicial custody after the central agency did not press for custodial interrogation.

Earlier this week, two other accused in the case – Vinayak Shinde, a dismissed police constable and Naresh Gor, a cricket bookie, were sent to judicial remand.

During the course of investigations, the NIA took Vaze to multiple locations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and seized 8 high-end cars and SUVs and a bike. It also recovered the electronic gadgets that he had dumped in the Mithi river.
