In a stunning development, former controversial Mumbai Police commissioner Param Bir Singh - who is untraceable for the past several months - had stated that he has no more evidence to submit against then home minister and senior NCP leader Anil Deshmukh.
Singh, an officer of the 1988-batch of the IPS has reportedly escaped India and is currently hiding either in Europe or Russia.
His last posting was as commandant general of Home Guards.
Deshmukh, on the other hand, has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate and is under the remand of the federal agency.
Singh had alleged that Deshmukh had fixed a Rs 100 crore per month collection target for now dismissed assistant police inspector Sachin Waze - after which the latter had to quit the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government.
The Maharashtra government has instituted a Commission of Inquiry by Justice (Retd) Kailash Uttamchand Chandiwal to probe Singh's allegations against Deshmukh, however, the police officer has not appeared before it.
In a submission through an affidavit recently, Singh has stated that he does not have any more information to share.
The Commission had thrice imposed fines on Singh – of Rs 5,000 in June and Rs 25,000 each on two other occasions – for failing to appear before it.
Singh has not made himself available for cross-examination.
Last week, two Magistrate courts - in Mumbai and neighbouring Thane city - issued non-bailable warrants against him in different cases of alleged extortion
