Mahatma Gandhi's grandson Arun Gandhi passes away at 89

Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Arun Gandhi passed away at Kolhapur in Maharashtra on Tuesday after brief illness.

The funeral of the 89-year-old and South African-born Indian-American author and socio-political activist will be held at Kolhapur later today.

Born to Manilal Gandhi and Sushila Mashruwala in Durban on April 14, 1934, Arun Gandhi followed in the footsteps of his grandfather as an activist.

Arun Gandhi is survived by his son Tushar Gandhi and daughter Archana, their families, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

“Arun Gandhi, author and a grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, passed away this morning in Kolhapur,” veteran peace activist and journalist Jatin Desai posted on social media platforms.

Arun Gandhi always expressed universalist views.

His books include The Gift of Anger: And Other Lessons From My Grandfather Mahatma Gandhi, The Forgotten Woman: The Untold Story of Kastur, the Wife of Mahatma Gandhi, written jointly with his late wife Sunanda, and Legacy of Love: My Education in the Path of Nonviolence, his bestseller.
