New bus shelter of no use in Madikeri

Last Updated 09 December 2018, 17:48 IST

For bus commuters in Madikeri, there is no escape from the scorching Sun.

Due to lack of a proper bus shelter, commuters have no option but to brave the blazing sun.

Though the new bus shelter has been constructed, it is not being utilised by the buses. As a result, commuters are forced to wait for buses on the old bus stand premises.

Following the recent natural calamity, a hillock situated behind the old private bus stand had collapsed. Accordingly, the CMC had decided to pull down the bus shelter and had asked all the buses to use the newly built bus shelter.

However, only a few buses leave from the new bus shelter. Hence, commuters are forced to wait for the buses on the old bus stand premises under the blazing sun.

It is a common sight to see all the buses travelling to Gonikoppa, Bhagamandala, Virajpet, Siddapura and Somwarpet parked at the old bus stand premises.

In the interest of passengers, a bus shelter should be constructed at the old bus stand premises itself, urged many passengers.

Allegation

The bus owners allege that the CMC has failed to issue information on the bus routes that pass through the new bus shelter in Madikeri.

CMC President Kaveramma Somanna said, “The old bus shelter building was pulled down following the direction of the deputy commissioner. The commuters have to go to the new bus shelter to board a bus. The council of the CMC will decide on constructing a temporary bus shelter and toilet at the old bus stand premises.”

Private Bus Owners’ Association president Joyappa said, “No one is concerned about the plight of passengers. Senior citizens and women struggle without toilet facilities. The CMC and the district administration should make arrangements for the convenience of the commuters.”

Shaukat Ali, a commuter, said, “I am tired of waiting for the bus under the scorching sun. The concerned authorities should construct a bus shelter.”
