Prathyush wins silver in Astronomy Olympiad

Prathyush P Poduval from Mangaluru city made the country and the city proud by winning the silver medal at the International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Prathyush pursuing his degree in basic science at the IISc, Bengaluru, is the son of MRPL (Project Department) Chief General Manager Prasanth P Pdoduval and Sunita P Poduval.

“Prathyush was trained for the Olympiads by the Centre For Advanced Learning (CFAL),” Severene Rosario, CFAL programme coordinator said on Tuesday.

The International Olympiad was organised in Beijing, China, from November 3 to 11. There were 214 students across the world, competing against each other. Around 40 countries participated in the Olympiad.

Prathyush was the only candidate from South India and was part of the five-member team representing India. In 2018, four students from Mangaluru had qualified for the selection camp of the International Olympiads. All of them were students of CFAL. India bagged 3 silver and 2 bronze medals at the Olympiad.

State topper

Rosario further said that Prathyush studied Advanced Sciences and Mathematics at CFAL from his eighth grade. Being the Karnataka state topper in KVPY 2017-18, he has been offered a yearly scholarship of Rs 84,000 by the government.

Prathyush attended Ross Math Camp, which was held in Ohio State University, US, in the months of June and July.

CFAL Programme Coordinator Vijay Moras and Prathyush’s parents Prasanth and Sunitha were present.
