The upgrade of the district prison at a cost of Rs 65 lakh has been completed. The prison is set to welcome inmates who are in Karwar and Mangaluru prisons.

The permission to shift the prisoners back to Udupi is expected in a couple of days. The inmates will be shifted once the ADGP approves the process.

There are approximately 70 prisoners in Karwar jail and 50 in Mangaluru prison. All of them will be shifted to Anjaru once permission is received.

The prison was built at a cost of Rs 1.86 crore at Anjaru in Hiriyadka. The jail authorities have written a letter to ADGP-Prison seeking permission to shift the inmates. A letter was written to the prison commissioner. In-charge jail superintendent Sanjay Jitti told DH that painting and minor repair will be completed within a few days. The district jail was also furnished recently.

The prison commissioner had visited the prison on October 4 to look into the progress of the works.

Jitti said that the renovation was taken up as most of the facilities including walls, kitchen, toilets and the drainage were damaged. The initiative to renovate was taken up on June 20, 2018.

He said the parking space and visitors rooms have also been renovated. Solar panels have been installed.

There are three barracks in the prison. Each barrack can accommodate nearly 40 prisoners. The walls are 22 feet high. There are also three separate areas to house the accused/convicts charged under felonious crimes.

There are as many as 18 CCTV cameras in the prison. The district jail was built in 2009 on 15 acres of land in Anjaru. The prison can house 110 inmates including 10 women prisoners.
