Shrill horns: 34 buses seized

Buses seized for use of shrill horns were parked at Nehru Maidan in Mangaluru on Monday.

The Mangaluru City Traffic Police on Monday booked cases against 34 buses in the city for using shrill horns.

The unabated use of shrill horns by bus operators had been inconveniencing road users.

Although the use of vacuum horns that emanates shrill noise is banned under the Motor Vehicles Act and Rules, operators had been using them.

The City Police Commissioner had been receiving complaints from citizens during all the phone-in programme every week on the use of shrill horns.

A team led by ACP (Traffic) Manjunath Shetty carried out a special drive to check shrill horns in the buses in front of RTO office in Mangaluru. All buses travelling on the stretch were inspected. As many as 34 buses were found using shrill horns and have been seized and parked at Nehru Maidan.

Manjunath Shetty said that all the seized buses have been handed over to the RTO for further action. Use of shrill horns amounts to violation of bus permit conditions. Transport department has been recommended to initiate strict action as per the law, said Shetty.
