In this episode of The Lead from DH Radio, S L Bhyrappa talks about his novel 'Uttarakaanda' and more

Jagadish Angadi: Hello all. With me today here is Dr S L Bhyrappa, one of the most popular novelists of India. S L Bhyrappa is a conscious artist who depicts fundamental emotions in his novels. He has a profound knowledge about Indian psychological and cultural traditions and had intense experience about the rural and urban milieu. He is known to describe dwindling human emotions and experiences. His characters are deeply rooted in Indian soil. He has penned 24 novels and 4 volumes of literary criticism and books on aesthetics, social issues and culture. Most of his novels have been translated into almost all Indian languages and 6 into English.

The novel 'Uttarakaanda' is S L Bhyrappa's attempt to look at Rama's story from Sita's perspective and experience. He adds a tinge of today's perspective in an interesting and engaging way. The novel brings out the voice of a neglected female character. It fills and uncovers a philosophical gulf. The overhyped mythological sub-stories that have masked and covered up so far. The novel captures emotions as he narrates the story from a person's perspective. The raw emotions running across the mins of Sita, Rama, Laxmana and Sita's though about Rama and his Rajdharma, and Laxaman's unmatched love towards his brother are the elements that make 'Uttarakaanda' the novel read. In an exclusive interview, Bhyrappa speaks on a range of issues including his stands, his novel, his ideologies and contemporary literary work. Welcome to Deccan Herald sir.

S L Bhyrappa: Thank you.

Jagadish Angadi: Sir, the first questions to you is: Parva was your response to Mahabharata 40 years ago. Why did you take so much time to respond to Ramayana?

S L Bhyrappa: After reading Parva, some of my friends asked me 'why don't you write Ramayana the same way you have written Parva'...
