Korea drub Indian women

Dominant South Korean women handed India a footballing lesson, romping to a crushing 10-0 victory to secure their quarterfinal berth here at the Namdong Asiad Rugby Field on Wednesday.

Young Yoo pumped in four goals while Gaeul Jeon netted thrice  as South Korea, who won the bronze medal in the previous edition at Guangzhou, totally dominated the Indians from the opening whistle.

The Indian women’s football team was one of the squads the Sports Authority of India wanted to be axed from flying to Incheon as they felt the team didn’t stand much of a chance and merely wanted to make up the numbers.

SAI’s thoughts seeemed justified with the Indian eves forced into the defensive early. Despite playing with a nine-women defensive line-up, they couldn’t stop the Koreans from galloping away to an effortless victory.

The tone for the massive win was set as early as in the seventh minute when Damyeong Shin crossed in from the left into the box which Gaeul comfortably tapped home.

Two minutes later Gaeul played the provider as Younga Lee finished off a fine through pass. Heeyoung Park then ended 17 minutes of drought, shooting home in the 36th minute before Gaeul scored her second minutes later.

Younga completed her brace too on the stroke of half-time as the Koreans broke for the interval with a commanding 5-0 lead. To make matters worse for India, captain Bembem Devi Oinam was red-carded seven minutes upon resumption and Koreans then gleefully knocked in the goals to the delight of the decent crowd that turned up for the night clash.

Result: South Korea 10 (Gaeul Jeon 7th, 40th, 61st, Younga Yoo 9th, 45th, 63rd, 65th, Heeyoung Park 36th, Seolbin Jung 49th, 79th) bt India: 0.
