Rain hits Stayers' Cup; Solomon top sprinter

 Solomon, ridden by DK Ashish and trained by P Shroff, caused a big shock in the Attila Sprinters’ Cup over 1200 metres, romping to splendid one-length victory on a rain-marred day at Mahalaxmi Race Course here on Saturday.

On the first of the two-day Indian Turf Invitation Cup, Solomon, ridden astutely by Ashish, romped home in 1:09.92, finishing fractionally outside the course record. Brynhill, piloted by I Chisty, came home second while favourite Dancing Prances (A Sandesh astride) crossed the line third.

Rain made its presence felt at the Invitation Cup weekend for the second straight year, forcing the Deltin Casinos Stayers’ Cup to be put off by a day. Unlike in 2014 when heavy rain forced Hyderabad authorities to postpone one of the biggest events in the Indian racing calendar by a week, Mumbai was hit by steady drizzle throughout the day.

That was enough for the jockeys to refuse to ride as they felt heavy underfoot conditions could prove very dangerous. The stewards of RWITC had no choice but to postpone the final two races of the day -- the Stayers’ Cup and Omkar 1973 Worli Million -- to Sunday.
The two races will be held before the start of regular events, with racing commencing at 12.45 pm.
