As the buzz of protests over the Delhi gang rape subsides in the city, ‘Heinous Crime Statistics of Mysore District’, show that as many as 90 rape cases were registered in the district from 2010-2012.

It is said that the number of unreported cases was greater, since 90 per cent of the perpetrators of rape are known to victims, as per National Crime Records Bureau survey.

In the year 2012, 26 cases of rape were registered, 20 in 2011 and 44 in 2010 in the district.

Although, 85 cases of the registered were true cases, there has been a conviction in only one case, which is equivalent to 0.012 per cent. Number of cases registered under ‘Pending Trials’ is 58, while 16 cases are under investigation. In 11 cases, the accused were acquitted of the crime.

Dowry harassment

The total number of dowry harassment cases was 130, with 43 cases registered in 2010, 44 in 2011 and 43 in 2012, sticking to an average. There are 22 true cases in the past three years, where dowry harassment eventually led to a dowry death case. Again, conviction is one.

Of the 24 dowry death cases, two cases, statistics show, were false.

Road accidents

Among the data available in the crime statistics of the district is the number of fatal accidents.

Approximately two people lost their lives every three days in road accidents in the past three years.

Total number of fatalities was 732. 271 people perished in the year 2012, as against 228 in 2011 and 233 in 2010.

The district recorded 223 murders in the past three years. Although 205 cases were true cases,  conviction rate was 0.02 per cent. There was conviction in only 5 cases, of which 4 cases were booked in 2010 and one in 2011.

The statistics was compiled from cases registered at police stations and out-posts under the jurisdiction of Superintendent of Police.
