Massive landslide may affect Koppa-Sringeri Road

As rain fury continues, a massive landslide has occurred on Balehonnur-Jayapura State Highway on Thursday night.

A side portion of Balehonnur-Jayapura road has caved in, creating a 60 feet deep trench. The movement of heavy vehicles is likely to be prohibited on the road. If the landslide continues, connectivity between Koppa and Sringeri will get affected.

Chikkamagaluru PWD Executive Engineer Anandamurthy said that warning signs have been put up on the road as a precautionary measure.

The Executive Engineer directed the official concerned to deploy a security guard to alert the vehicle drivers, near
the spot where landslide occurred.

He further said that a team of officials have inspected the spot at Bababudengiri where landslide has occurred. The work of clearing the debris is being carried out on war-footing. Another landslide has occurred in Kottigehara-Hirebail.

“A loss of Rs 6 crore has been estimated in the district, due to heavy rains. A report on the estimated loss has been submitted to the DC, for further actions,” he added.

PWD (Koppa) Assistant Engineer Nagaraj was present.
